Do you like to take baths? Whether you’re sick, sad or just need a relaxing break, taking a bath is one of the best ways to give yourself a little TLC. And though it might seem like there’s nothing you could do to bring a good ol’ bath up another notch in the relaxation department, there actually is. Enter, soaking salts. They can make your skin soft and smooth, your muscle aches go away and your stress disappear. There are a plethora of different soaking blends available to purchase at the store, but why go and buy a premade one when you can make your own and customize it to exactly what you want/need? With just a few simple and easy to find ingredients, you can make your own soaking blend to soften, soothe and melt your worries away.

You will need:

  • Shea butter (about ¼ to ½ half tsp)

  • 1 cup Epsom salts

  • 1 cup Dead sea salts

  • Essential oil(s) of choice

  • Bowl and spoon for mixing

  • Small pot or double boiler for melting Shea butter

  • Wide mouth jar or other container of choice for storing

First, you will need to gently melt the Shea butter over low heat in your pot or double boiler. While the Shea is slowly melting, combine your soaking salts in the mixing bowl and stir until well blended. Next, drip 10-20 drops of your chosen essential oil(s) into the salt mix, and follow that with the melted Shea butter. Mix everything together thoroughly and pay special attention to the Shea butter; you want to make sure it evenly coats as much of the salt mixture as possible. Once finished mixing, transfer soaking blend to your container of choice and store in a cool, dry place. When you are ready to take a bath, simply use a few tablespoons to a ¼ cup in the tub for your soaking pleasure.

While most soaking blends do not contain a carrier oil like Shea butter, the addition of a small amount of Shea provides the perfect amount of moisturization for the skin that softens and nourishes but doesn’t leave a greasy residue or clog up the tub. Coupled with the mineralizing Dead Sea salts, skin softening and muscle ache busting Epsom salts and aromatherapeutic essential oils, you’ve got yourself a winning combination to make even the most mundane night at home feel special, relaxing and pampering.
